Drones on Mars: NASA's Exploration of the Red Planet with Unmanned Aerial Systems

NASA has sent several drones to Mars as part of its Mars Exploration Program. The most recent drone mission to Mars was the Mars Helicopter, also known as Ingenuity, which was carried to the planet on the Perseverance rover and deployed in April 2021.

Ingenuity is a small, lightweight drone that is designed to fly in the thin atmosphere of Mars. It is equipped with a range of sensors and cameras to gather data and capture images of the Martian surface. The mission's primary goal is to demonstrate the feasibility of powered flight on another planet, but Ingenuity will also be used to gather data and images that could be useful for future Mars missions.

Other drones that have been sent to Mars include the Mars rover Curiosity, which has a suite of scientific instruments and cameras that it uses to study the Martian surface, and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which is an satellite that orbits Mars and captures high-resolution images of the planet's surface.
