Obtaining a Drone License in Virginia: A Guide to the FAA's Remote Pilot Certificate Requirements

In the state of Virginia, individuals and businesses that want to operate drones commercially are required to obtain a Remote Pilot Certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). To obtain this certificate, individuals must pass a written exam covering topics such as airspace rules, weather, and aircraft performance. In addition, they must meet certain age, English language proficiency, and physical and mental fitness requirements.

To prepare for the FAA written exam, individuals may choose to take a training course or study on their own using study materials such as the FAA's Remote Pilot - Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) Airman Certification Standards (ACS) or a study guide.

Once an individual has obtained a Remote Pilot Certificate, they will be required to renew it every two years by completing a recurrent training program.

It's important to note that in addition to the FAA requirements, there may be state or local laws and regulations that apply to drone operations in Virginia. It's important to be familiar with these laws and to follow them when operating drones in the state.
