Drone bee

A drone bee is a male honey bee. In a honey bee colony, the drones are responsible for mating with queen bees from other colonies.

Drone bees do not participate in the everyday tasks of the colony, such as gathering nectar and pollen or caring for the young.

They are larger than worker bees and do not have a stinger.

Drone bees are produced by the queen bee when she lays eggs that are not fertilized by sperm.

The drones develop from these unfertilized eggs and are therefore genetically identical to the queen.

When the queen mates with a drone from another colony, she will receive sperm from the drone, which she can use to fertilize eggs and produce a mixed-genetics offspring.
